The thought of waterfront living usually calls to mind the shoreline of Long Island Sound for most people. But any body of water can provide a hypnotic and relaxing setting.
Case in point: The riverfront estate at 4 Manitou Road in the town's Compo Beach area. The Nantucket shingle style Colonial house sits on a 2.02-acre level and sloped property along the Saugatuck River. This impressive private retreat has so many assets it's difficult to prioritize them or even mention all of them, but they start with the river.
Built in 1999, this house replaced a smaller contemporary structure, and the architect made the most of the property. Author and radio and television personality Art Linkletter had a connection to this property. A commemorative plaque on the pool reads. "Dedicated by Art Linkletter June 13, 1968." Linkletter was a friend and business associate of Westport entrepreneur Wilson Harrell, who originally owned the property. Harrell, Linkletter and David Woodcock purchased the cleaning product Formula 409 for $30,000 and Linkletter promoted it in on television commercials nationally. Six years later, the trio sold the company to Clorox for $7 million.
There is a deep water dock from which to launch boating vessels into the Saugatuck River. The path to the dock is lined on both sides by stone walls topped with slabs of slate. The river also holds a secret nearby passageway from one shore to the other, which creates a commuter's dream: Easy walking distance to the Saugatuck train station.
Inside, there is an open floor plan comprising 5,976-square-feet of living space. It's impossible to mention every worthwhile element of this house, but highlights include the exposed beam ceilings in many rooms, the unusual and intricate design of the coffered ceiling in the office, the marble surround of the master bedroom fireplace as well as its ornately paneled walls and hand-painted beams, the outdoor stone fireplace, and the wine gallery that doubles as a butler's pantry. The wine gallery has built-in racks that can accommodate about 400 bottles of wine and other spirits.
A first-floor half bath and the laundry room both have slate flooring. In the bath the slate tiles are bordered by double rows of mosaic tiles. The laundry room has double LG washers and dryers.
The kitchen features a two-tiered center island topped in granite and wood, a farm sink, and custom cabinetry with dovetail drawers. Appliances include a Viking Professional six-burner range with double ovens, Sub-Zero refrigerator and Gaggenau dishwasher. Across from the kitchen is a sitting room that could be a breakfast nook with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and built-in desk area.
Off the mudroom is an au pair bedroom en suite. There is a bonus bedroom suite with private entrance above the three-car heated garage.
The remaining bedrooms, four of them, are all en suite. One is the actual master bedroom on the second floor. The others, one on the first floor, could easily be mistaken as master bedrooms given their size and amenities. The one on the first floor is a guest room with a dressing room and door to the covered back porch.
The master bedroom has French doors to a balcony looking out to the river, and another bedroom has a door to a large roof top deck. Both master baths have travertine marble floors and large cedar closets. Her bath has a custom vanity with honed marble counter and double Jacuzzi tub with hand shower. His has a large frameless glass shower with rain head.
The large basement has wall-to-wall carpeting and enough space to divide it into a play area and a family room or media center.
Despite the property's proximity to the water, the house is sufficiently above the water that carrying flood insurance is not required, according to a residential property condition disclosure report.
