The Colonial house at 102 Kettle Creek Road in lower Weston was designed by an interior designer from New York. It was her first project and the result was a different kind of floor plan from the typical Colonial, which usually has a center hall with the living room to one side and the dining room to the other.
The design she came up with has the more casual and utilitarian parts of the house on one side and the more formal rooms on the other. The front door is to the left rather than at the center of the front façade of the yellow clapboard house with white trim.
On this end of the house is the two-story foyer, the family room, laundry room, mudroom with access to the three-car attached garage, and a separate utility room. The other wing of the house includes the formal living and dining rooms, an office and the gourmet kitchen with an eat-in area.
Built in 1998, this 5,445-square-foot house sits on a 1.23-acre level property in an area of Weston that is particularly desirable because of its easy access to schools, retail shops and traffic arteries. The house is convenient to the Merritt Parkway in one direction and the center of Weston in the other. Also nearby is Keene Park, on River Road, which has a playground and a path to the Saugatuck River.
The house features pilaster millwork, wainscoting, and in the oak floors of two rooms and the foyer there is a double border of inlaid walnut wood. The covered front entrance is marked by two columns and has a paneled door flanked by sidelights and topped with a transom. On the second floor there is an interior balcony that looks down into the foyer.
Between the living and dining rooms is a space that contains built-in cabinets and shelves. The living room has a marble fireplace with a millwork mantle that features dentil molding. The dining room has a bow wall/window, chair rail, wainscoting on the lower walls and wallpaper covering the rest.
The office can be accessed from the dining room or the kitchen. It has a door to a large wood deck. The deck can also be accessed from the kitchen and the family room, the latter of which has French doors.
Kitchen features include granite counters, glass-front cabinets, a tray ceiling and recessed lighting. The counters jut out like peninsulas at both ends of the kitchen; one separates it from the eat-in area and the other separates it from the family room. The butler's pantry has a granite counter and a circular stainless sink. New stainless appliances include GE Monogram double ovens, refrigerator and dishwasher.
The family room has a bow wall with windows and a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace.
On the second floor there is a large landing -- which could accommodate a computer or homework space -- leading to four bedrooms, two of which are en suite. The other two share a Jack-and-Jill bath.
The master bedroom suite features a vaulted ceiling, sitting room, and his and hers walk-in closets with organizers. The master bath has a marble floor, double marble vanity with tumbled marble backsplash, spa tub, and a marble steam shower.
