Some people prefer the convenience of living close to transportation hubs, shops and restaurants. Others prefer the blessed peace of the wilderness, where the only sound that reaches their ears is that of birdsong and rustling leaves in a breeze.

The Contemporary house at 32 Ladder Hill Road South in Weston can offer a bit of both. Bird-watchers, hikers and general nature lovers will love this property. It leans more toward wilderness with its three-acre property, a mix of rugged terrain and level, open lawn perched on the edge of a 1,700-acre nature preserve. And it feels very remote as it sits down a long and winding road and driveway, surrounded by woodlands and few neighbors. But the house is really only about five minutes, if that, from Weston Center and 15 minutes from downtown Westport.

The property shares a driveway with the four homes on this road, although the road is so private that most of the neighbors do not live within view.

The current owner has enjoyed this quiet location. The house is on the market for the first time in 30 years. In addition to the main house, which has four bedrooms and a long, wooden wrap-around deck, the property contains a spring-fed pond and a 600-square-foot, three-stall horse barn with a tack room and hay loft.

The owner has not had horses for a while but the barn could be used again for horses or other animals, or it could be converted into a chicken coop, art studio, office, or other use. The barn has electrical service but no plumbing.

The property is surrounded by tall trees and fieldstone walls. It shares the pond with the nature conservancy.

Built in 1976, the house has 2,661 square feet of living space. The living is extended outdoors by the large balcony/deck, one portion of which is covered. This deck is at the rear of the house and can be accessed from the living room, family room and dining room. In the front of the house there is a tiered wood deck.

Floor-to-ceiling red brick fireplaces are found in the living and family rooms.

There is slate flooring in the foyer and an alcove for a desk, and a second-floor balcony that looks down into the family room.

Features in the updated kitchen include granite counters, an eat-in section or breakfast room, and GE Profile stainless appliances.

The master bedroom suite is only six steps up from the main level. It includes a large bedroom with a vaulted ceiling, wall-to-wall carpeting, two closets, and a separate sitting room. The master bath features ceramic tile floor, soaking tub, and walk-in shower with 1950s-inspired glass cubes.

On the second floor there are three bedrooms, each with double closets and their own air conditioning units.

Recessed areas in the master bedroom and foyer allow for displays of sculpture, decorative vases or other artwork.

There will be an open house at the property from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
