The newly constructed house at 79 Richmondville Ave. is described as a Colonial, and it is, but no one from the Colonial era in early America ever envisioned such a home.
Designed by architect Bruce Beinfield and constructed by Milton Development, the house was built this year on a 0.65-acre level and sloping property along the Saugatuck River and Lee Pond. The owners of this house can enjoy canoeing, kayaking and other activities on the river and pond.
Beinfield used a popular transitional design with an open floor plan to create a great every day residence and indoor/outdoor entertainment space. Seventeenth-century Americans would not have known what to do with all the space of the 5,750-square-foot, 11-room house, or its long wood deck, its cavernous master bedroom suite or its equally spacious gourmet kitchen.
While it is called a Colonial house, and it has many elements of that particular style, this house also feels very contemporary with its walls of glass that line the back of the house to provide spectacular views of the river and pond from almost every room.
This house sits on a portion of Richmondville Avenue that is a cul-de-sac, which adds to its private setting, and while it feels miles away from anything, the house is actually conveniently close to the Merritt Parkway and downtown Westport.
A paved, circular driveway lined in Belgian block leads to the bluestone path and arched steps to the arched front door. It opens into the two-story foyer and reveals hardwood floors throughout that are tinged with a gray stain.
Walk forward and take three steps up to a landing with a powder room, access to the staircase to the second floor and steps straight ahead and down into the family room.
The formal living room is to the left of the foyer and has a tray ceiling with a coffered affect, a wall of built-in bookshelves and a fireplace with a yellow brick firebox. Nestled among the bookshelves is a wet bar with a copper sink and beverage refrigerator. This room is open to the family room.
The yellow brick firebox of the fireplace in the family room is arranged in a herringbone pattern. This room also has two sets of French doors that access different parts of the long, raised bluestone patio or deck, which provides water views.
The formal dining room is completely open and flows into the family room and kitchen, both of which have tray ceilings.
Kitchen features include a large center island and marble counters and backsplash. Appliances include a Viking Professional range top with six burners and a griddle, a Viking Professional refrigerator, two Viking Professional wall-mounted ovens, and two Bosch dishwashers, the latter of which will come in handy for all the entertaining the owners will likely do.
Off the kitchen is a large mudroom with a wall of three double-door closets, storage cubbies, cabinets, and a built-in desk area. A door here leads to the same patio/deck. There is a second door to a slate porch and the side yard, and another door that provides access to the two-car garage.
On the second floor, there is a good size landing with a window seat and built-in bookshelves; the perfect spot to curl up with a book on a rainy day. There are five bedrooms including two that share a Jack-and-Jill bath.
The master bedroom suite has a vaulted ceiling and is constructed so that the bed faces the water, guaranteeing that inhabitants wake to a relaxing view. The master bath has a double marble vanity and backsplash.
In the full, finished basement there is one large room with wall-to-wall carpeting and an exercise room with a rubberized floor. There is a full bath on this level and a door to the backyard.
