A long driveway in a rural area of northern Fairfield leads to an equestrian encalve at 95 Evergreen Hill Road. The 2.09-acre parcel in the Greenfield Hill section of town is the site of an eight-room Colonial house, three-stall horse barn and a fenced paddock.

After an afternoon of horseback riding, cool off in the in-ground, free-form Gunite swimming pool or relax on the bluestone patio of the quiet and well-groomed backyard or lounge in the screened porch. To one side of the garage is a contemplative area with a decorative red brick and crushed stone path. For those who would rather hike than ride, the Connecticut Audubon Society's Larsen Sanctuary is nearby.

In winter months, trade the pool for the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace of the family room for relaxing. There is another fireplace in the formal living room.

Built in 1956, this 3,371-square-foot house also features a breezeway that connects the main house to the oversized two-car garage, which has doors that resemble those found on a barn and a cupola topped with a deer weathervane, as well as loft storage. The breezeway has a stone floor and provides access to the front and backyards via two sets of French doors, and in the main house it leads to the sizable family room.

Every room in the house provides a relaxing view of the quiet setting and its various features such as the pool area, landscaped gardens, barn, paddock, fenced meadow and the border of woodlands. The landscaping includes tall sea grasses, mature plantings and a sycamore tree.

A slate path takes visitors from the gravel driveway lined in Belgian block and the parking area to the formal front door, which has sidelights and opens to a foyer. The gravel was replenished in 2011.

Inside, the living room has built-in bookshelves and a door to the screened porch. The fireplace has a mantle with dentil and other decorative molding. The dining room has chair railing and crown molding.

Kitchen features include a ceramic tile floor, tiered Corian counter, double stainless steel sinks, a cabinet "garage" for a coffee-maker or similar small appliance, eat-in area, and a peninsula that creates a breakfast bar that can accommodate three stools. Appliances include GE Monogram gas cook top, Frigidaire Gallery Professional series double ovens, Sub-Zero refrigerator and Kitchen Aid dishwasher.

The family room has exposed beams, ceiling fan, built-in bookshelves, bay windows, new Pella windows, and Brazilian birch wood floors. The rest of the house has oak flooring. There is a pocket door that separates it from the kitchen and in this area is a door with sidelights to the patio and pool.

Rounding out the first floor is an office or library.

Upstairs, there are three bedrooms. The front-to-back master bedroom has new windows and a new spa bath with radiant floor heating. The hall bath also has a heated floor. One bedroom provides access to the full, walk-up attic.

The basement is partially finished and has a playroom, which could be used for other purposes, and a laundry area. The basement has vinyl tile flooring and new casement windows.
