On the Market: Timeless Westport living in 7,000 square feet

WESTPORT — Timeless living could be the hallmark of the 7,659-square-foot custom colonial at 130 Hillandale Road in the Greens Farms neighborhood.
The white clapboard house with black shutters was built in 2009 in a collaboration between noted architect Paolo Vicente of Vicente Burin Architects and equally notable builder Michael Heine, both of whom were inspired by Belgian minimalist, Wim Pauwels on this project. Not surprisingly, Pauwels has authored a book titled “Timeless Living.” He also penned “Contemporary Architecture and Interiors.” This house fits that mold as well. Although it is a colonial in style, it defines the transitional modern aesthetic, and while it was built seven years ago one would guess it is newly constructed.
Following Pauwels’ minimalist philosophy the house has a simplicity of design and yet its features are not easily ignored. There is attention to detail in every room and even the clean lines of the millwork are exquisitely done elevating the design and construction to an art form.
A unifying factor is evident from the fence along the front of the house, where there is a crisscross pattern, which is repeated in the window pane dividers of the front door’s sidelights and transom. The walls of the open vestibule have a block pattern in two alternating sizes. It’s those types of unusual visual elements that are apparent throughout the house.

Step up into the spacious entrance foyer where the formal staircase to the second floor appears to float. There are hardwood floors throughout the house, which have a dramatic bleached or white-washed treatment.
Floor-to-ceiling windows in the formal living room illuminate the fireplace and the built-in bookshelves that flank it. There are also two walls of built-in bookshelves - though not at all typical in appearance, and a fireplace in the library. It also has bay windows. The third of the home’s five fireplaces is found in the family room, where there are French doors to a portion of the long, two-tiered stone patio that has a built-in grill - the first hint of this property’s indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The backyard contains a heated in-ground swimming pool with an unusual patio of stone squares with a grassy latticework. The landscape includes perennial gardens, specimen plantings, shaped shrubbery, tall arborvitaes, and mature trees.
The entire house is flooded with an abundance of natural light though never more obvious than in the spacious two-story chef’s kitchen, which has the traditional kitchen features and a couple not-so-traditional features including a cupola and interior window boxes at the base of the bay windows. There are stainless steel appliances, including two Sub-Zero refrigerators both with two freezer drawers, as well as stainless counters, and a massive center island.
