On the Market: In Newman’s neighborhood

WESTPORT — European sophistication meets Westport’s agrarian past in this one-of-a-kind stone and cedarwood house at 81 Coleytown Road in the town’s Coleytown neighborhood.
The tan-colored house was built in 1940 from a barn that was masterfully converted into a residence. The house, which has 5,801 square feet of living space, was completely renovated again in 2015 to expand its modern-day amenities, yet contractors made sure they kept the original barn charm.
The house sits on a 3.38-acre, largely level river-front property along the Aspetuck River, giving the rear part of the property greater privacy. This is Paul Newman territory. The late Academy Award-winning actor lived in this neighborhood, and often swam in the river, even in the winter. Directly behind the property is the protected open space that bears his name. The Newman-Poses Nature Preserve is a 37-acre area with hiking trails that is administered by the Aspetuck Land Trust.
It’s a great place to walk and birdwatch if one can extricate themselves from this attractive estate, which has an in-ground swimming pool and a large L-shaped screened porch that wraps around two sides of the pool. The porch and one side of the house combine to create a courtyard in which the pool is located. The porch has a slate floor, wood plank ceiling and stone walls.
Ample parking is available for guests in the long and spacious crushed stone driveway lined in Belgium block. Guests can be accommodated overnight, as there are nine bedrooms on this estate, six in the main house and another three in the guest house, which is located next door on another building lot that has a separate address. The two properties can be purchased together or individually. The guest room also has a kitchen.
A long bluestone path leads to the covered front porch of the main house. Inside, the family room opens to the screened porch and pool. It has a deep tray ceiling with dentil molding, large fireplace, wide-planked wood floor and decorative chair railing.
Off the family room is an en suite guest bedroom. On the opposite side of the family room there is a second guest bedroom, also en suite, that looks over the pool.

Between the family and living rooms there is a butler’s pantry with two counter areas, a beverage refrigerator, sink and glass-front cabinetry. In the living room there are stucco walls, an alcove with a three-sided built-in window seat and a vaulted ceiling, half of which is barn wood. A loft area on the second floor that houses the master bedroom suite looks into the living room.
Fittingly, the gourmet, yet casual country kitchen has a farm sink and butcher block counters. It also features a Thermador Professional four-burner range with a griddle, and a Sub-Zero refrigerator hidden behind wood paneling. The center island serves as a divider between the preparation part of the kitchen and the good-sizes eat-in portion, which has the house’s original fireplace. It has a hand-hewn beam mantel. The room has exposed beams.
A back hall leads to a wing of the house that includes three bedrooms and two full baths. This end of the house also has a laundry room and mudroom, both of which have slate flooring. The mudroom has built-in shelves and a desk area. In this wing there is access to the attached garage and a door to the large bluestone patio surrounded by a stone sitting wall. There is a second very large stone patio around the pool.
