WESTPORT — Most people traveling down West Branch Road from Weston Road (Route 57) make the sharp right and continue on to Cavalry Road. They might want to consider making the left-handed turn and travel down the portion of the road that is a cul-de-sac and slow down as they approach 11 West Branch Road.
This is a property and house worth seeing. It is a classically beautiful house with a modern attitude. The 16-room, 7,757-square-foot colonial at 11 West Branch Road was built in 2005, and its visual appeal begins right at the front façade, which has an attractive mix of fieldstone and shingles. Adding to its appeal is the two-acre property with its landscaping and towering trees, and the location. This house is only about two miles from the Merritt Parkway.
It has easy access to the center of Weston and downtown Westport is a mere 10-minute drive, if that, and yet this is a very peaceful setting not far from Held Pond. The serenity of the location is enhanced by the fact that this is a cul-de-sac, which gets very little traffic.
Rounded stone pillars topped with lanterns mark the entrance to the driveway, which provides ample parking. The colonnaded, covered front entrance leads into the two-story foyer, where there is detailed paneling and millwork. The front-to-back formal living room has a limestone fireplace, French doors to a screened porch, and another door to one of the bluestone patios. This patio is on the side of the yard that contains the Gunite heated swimming pool.
The family room, which opens to the gourmet kitchen, features a floor-to-ceiling fireplace with a raised hearth and thick, hand-hewn beam mantel. It has a door to the same patio. The Carrera marble kitchen features a long two-tiered center island with a prep sink, a pot-filler over the Viking six-burner range with griddle, and beveled subway tiles for the backsplash.

Between the formal dining room and kitchen, the butler’s pantry has a marble counter, glass-front cabinetry, and a sink. In most dining rooms there is wainscoting on the lower walls and chair railing. This one has floor-to-ceiling paneling on all four walls.
Off the kitchen is a sizable mudroom that, like the living room, runs front to back. It has a door to another bluestone patio; this one contains a built-in grill area and fieldstone sitting wall topped with slate. The mudroom provides access to an au-pair suite and the three-car garage.
Four bedrooms are found on the second floor, as well as the laundry room and a good-sized homework area with a wall of two built-in desks and cabinetry. From there step down into a large bonus room with a vaulted ceiling above the garage. It contains a surprise additional room. Take several steps up to access this space, which is currently used as a billiard or game room. It has a cathedral ceiling and exposed beams.
The master bedroom suite has a gas fireplace with a green marble surround. The bath has a limestone floor and counters, a jetted tub, large shower and water closet. Between the sinks of the double vanity is a built-in makeup area.
