WEST HAVEN -- A man who allegedly held up a convenience store early Sunday by threatening the clerk with a hand saw was caught hours later because of tips from the public, police said.

Michael Peterson, 33, was arrested at his Front Street home at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, 12 hours after the holdup at Sam's Food Mart, Sgt. David Tammaro said.

Police had received a 911 call from the clerk at Sam's Mart, 667 Campbell Ave., at 2:50 a.m. that a man with a mask was acting suspiciously inside the business, Tammaro said.

While officers were en route "it was learned that the white male brandished a hand saw and threatened the clerk, stealing the cash register," the police department spokesman said. The suspect then got into a Chevrolet pickup and fled, with police in pursuit.

Officers lost sight of the suspect's vehicle after exiting onto Route 1 into East Haven, Tammaro said.

Based on tips, officers found Peterson at his home on Sunday afternoon.
