BRIDGEPORT -- An argument between two neighbors ended with one of the men shot in the face and the suspect still at large.

Police said Joseph Vernon, 31, was shot on the left side of his face inside his Clarence Street home shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday by a neighbor. Police have not released the identity of the suspect, but said that he fired several shots into Vernon's home before fleeing on foot.

Vernon was brought to Bridgeport Hospital and then transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital, officials said. His condition wasn't immediately available.

Police went to the suspect's home but he wasn't there, spokesman William Kaempffer said. A woman identified as his girlfriend was there, and she was arrested after narcotics were found in the home, Kaempffer said.

The woman, identified as 20-year-old Virginia Maldonado, was charged with possession of narcotics and risk of injury to a minor because a child was in the home, Kaempffer said.
