A two-car collision killed a mother and injured her young child in east Harris County Sunday morning.
Emil McMahon was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado southeast in the 4700 block of FM 1942 just before 11 a.m. when he moved into the shoulder to pass a vehicle, according to a press release from Harris County Sheriff's Office.
McMahon's truck began to spin after he reentered the roadway, crossing into the oncoming land and hitting a 2011 Nissan Sentra.
Witnesses reported the Silverado burst into flames.
Tania Vercher, who was driving the Sentra, was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. Her son, who was strapped into a forward-facing car seat in the middle of the backseat, was transported to an area hospital in critical condition and later flown via Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital because of the severity of his injuries, the release said.
