Four men are in police custody after they allegedly robbed a supermarket in east Houston early Thursday morning, grabbing cigarettes and other items during the heist.

The robbery occurred about 2:50 a.m. at a Kroger store at 4000 Polk near Cullen, according to the Houston Police Department.

Police said officers were dispatched to the scene about a robbery. When they arrived, workers told them five or six men had robbed the store and then ran away.

The workers gave the officers the suspects' descriptions. Officers found one of the men a short time later hiding in a trash can near a residence in the 11000 block of St. Joseph. He was taken into custody.

A short time later, the officers spotted three more of the suspects nearby standing beside their vehicle, a Ford Fusion. They were taken into custody. Inside the car, HPD spokesman Victor Senties said, officers found a "substantial quantity" of cigarettes believed to have been stolen during the robbery. Other items were also found in the car that may have been taken in the heist.

Senties said the man face robbery charges. Other suspects in the case may be on the run.
