A man was found dead after he leaped from the Causeway Bridge in Galveston on Friday afternoon.

The man, whose name has not been released, plunged from the southbound side of bridge about 2 p.m., said Elizabeth Rogers, a spokeswoman for the City of Galveston.

Rogers said Galveston Police Officer Blake Patton was traveling southbound on the bridge on his way to work when he spotted a car parked on the shoulder. He stopped and walked toward the vehicle. As he approached, he saw the man sitting on the railing. Then the man jumped.

Patton immediately called authorities. Emergency crews found the man a short later and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
