A 55-year-old man who led police on a chase after allegedly robbing a bank along Interstate 10 in east Harris County has been charged in the case.

Eugene Smith is charged with one count of robbery by threat in connection with the heist Monday afternoon at a Woodforest Bank inside the Walmart at 13750 East Freeway, according to the FBI.

FBI officials said Smith walked into the bank and handed tellers a threatening note that demanded money. He wore a fake beard.

After he was given an undisclosed amount of cash, Smith left the bank and drove away in a green minivan. Police spotted the van a short time later. They chased Smith, who crashed the van, jumped out and ran away. Officers followed him.

Smith was arrested a short time later near Mykawa and Dixie. Officials said he was subdued with a stun gun. Officials found the stolen cash in the van.
