A man beat to death a friend who had given him and a woman a temporary place to stay, then asked them to leave, authorities said.

Brandon DeJuan Gladney, 20, has been charged with murder. He is accused of killing Jimmy Wesley Petties, 57. Charging documents allege that Gladney beat Petties to death with a metal pipe.

Houston Police Department officers found Petties dead in his driveway early Tuesday in the 4300 block of Gregory near Wayne. An autopsy declared cause of death as blunt force head trauma. Initially, HPD reported that Petties had been fatally stabbed.

Gladney told homicide detectives Wednesday that when he and a female friend were asked to leave, he argued with Petties then killed him, according to an HPD news release.

Gladney is in jail and his bail was set at $50,000.

Gladney was convicted of misdemeanor trespassing and evading arrest last year, spending 15 days in county jail.
