A 38-year-old man died after crashing into a construction zone overnight in northwest Harris County, officials said.

The man, who has not been identified, was driving eastbound his Kia Soul around 12:10 a.m. at the 600 block of the North Sam Houston Parkway, said Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon.

The man was driving at a high rate of speed through a construction zone when the vehicle jumped a curb and struck a concrete support pillar on the overpass. The pillar rolled over, pinning the driver, Cannon said.

The driver was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity is pending verification with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
