A Harris County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a robbery suspect who grabbed a clerk by the throat early Monday morning at a gas station/convenience store in northwest Harris County, officials said.

The shooting happened about 1:45 a.m. at the Stripes store at 11720 Texas 249, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Deputy James Strech was called to the scene about a traffic hazard created by the way a car was parked. The deputy entered the store as the robbery was taking place.

As the attacker appeared to choke the employee, Strech ordered him to stop and show his hands. The attacker tossed a money bag at the deputy and reached into his pocket. Fearing the attacker was going to pull out a weapon, Strech fired one gunshot. The attacker died.

The deputy was not injured. Strech has been with the sheriff's office since 2000. He is assigned to patrol.

Deputies did not release other details about the case.
