A Winnie man was charged on Sunday with the murder of his 2-year-old stepdaughter, according to the Chambers County Sheriff's Office.
Kristopher James "Bubba" Redd, 23, faces a capital murder charge.
Deputies responded to the 200 block of West Elm about 9:15 a.m. Sunday for a medical call, but Redd had already fled the scene, according to the release.
Emergency medical technicians attempted to resuscitate the child, who was transported to Winnie Community Hospital where further revival attempts were unsuccessful.
The medical staff reported signs of abuse.
Another child in the home was placed in protective custody.
Redd was located, questioned and charged, although the release notes additional charges might be filed in the ongoing investigation.
In 2008, Redd was charged in Williamson County for possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana. He was sentenced to 18 months probation. While on probation in 2010, he was arrested for assault of a family member.
Winnie is about 60 miles east of Houston.
