Houston BARC has cut adoption prices by half for a special holiday event after seeing a 10 percent increase in intake this winter.
"We have tons and tons of animals coming through our doors, we usually see a decrease in fall and winter but this year we haven't, the numbers are increasing," said BARC spokesperson Ashton Rivet. "We want as many as possible in loving homes for the holidays."
Their "Home for the Holidays" mega pet adoption event will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Petco on FM1960. Regular adoption fees will be half off: $25 for dogs, $17.50 for cats. The event sponsor, Proler Southwest/Sims Metal Management will also donate a full adoption fee for every pet that gets a home.
But BARC does not want to encourage giving pets as Christmas gifts. They say pet ownership is a serious responsibility. Pets will only be adopted out if the new owner is present at the event.
