METRO will offer free rides to keep late night partygoers safe on New Year's Eve.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority will give free rides starting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 6 a.m. on New Year's Day on the bus and the rail system, the agency said Thursday.

The service for New Year's Eve will follow regular, public schedules. The METRORAIL will operate until 2 a.m.

"METRO wants to help individuals celebrating the arrival of the New Year find a safe option to get home rather than getting behind the wheel," the agency said in a statement.

On New Year's Day, local bus routes and METRORail will operate a Sunday schedule. There will be no Park and Ride service that day and both the Customer Care Center. The RideStore and Lost and Found will also be closed.
