Officials: NY inmate dies after being attacked by prisoner

AUBURN, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say an investigation is underway into the death of a New York state prison inmate who was attacked by another prisoner.
The Citizen of Auburn reports (http://bit.ly/2uysLLi ) the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision reported that 51-year-old Daniel Wingate was pronounced dead last Friday at a hospital.
Wingate was an inmate at the maximum-security Auburn Correctional Facility, in the Finger Lakes region. State prison officials say he was a repeat sex offender serving a five-year sentence for a sexual abuse conviction in the Rochester area. Wingate was scheduled to be released in September.
Cayuga County prosecutors say Wingate was attacked by another inmate and that state police are investigating his death as a homicide.
No other details have been released.
