RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Washoe County District Attorney has ruled a January police shooting justified.

District Attorney Chris Hicks has released a report into the Jan. 25 incident on Tuesday, finding that under Nevada law, the shooting of 36-year-old Sergio Alvarado-Morales was justified.

According to the investigation, Alvarado-Morales was acting erratically and cutting himself with a knife when officers approached him after a crash. The officers gave him verbal commands to drop the weapon and tried to use a stun gun on Alvarado-Morales with little effect. Eventually Alvarado-Morales advanced toward officers and was shot.

Hicks said in the report that the officers were faced with a "deranged and suicidal man" who showed a willingness to harm himself and others.
