The Westport Arts Center and Westport Farmers Market are sponsoring a student digital photography competition, “Young Shoots,” for those 8 to 18 years old.

The competition is designed to provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate creativity through digital photography, and to showcase the fare at the weekly farmers, according to a press release.

“Partnering with the Westport Arts Center on the Young Shoots competition is the perfect way to mix food, youth and art while having a good time,” Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of the farmers’ market, said in the contest announcement. “We are thrilled to celebrate our local youth photographers this season.”

“Both food lovers and art lovers enjoy a strong presentation of aesthetics,” added Helen Klisser During, the arts center’s artistic director. “There is a deep-rooted passion that runs across food growers, to those who attend the Westport Farmers’ Market, to artists.”

Entries must be submitted by Aug. 1, and can be sent to submissions@westportartscenter.org.

In addition to the jurors' selections, the public can vote for their favorite photographs. "Fan Favorites" votes can be cast on the Westport Arts Center website: www.westportartscenter.org beginning Aug. 5.

Selected Young Shoots photographers will have their work showcased in a gallery-like setting at a Sept. 15 reception at the local restaurant Sugar & Olives.

In addition, first- and second-place winners in each category will win a $50 cash prize, and "Fan Favorite" winners in each age category will win a one-year membership to the Westport Arts Center and a Westport Farmers Market tee-shirt.
