The Westport Weston Family Y is again offering free memberships to students in the Westport and Weston school districts who will enter seventh grade in the fall.

The Y said the offer is effective at the end of the current school year and is valid through the end of the 2012-13 school year. Students attending private and parochial schools in both towns also are eligible.

Introduced a year ago, the program attracted 130 current seventh-graders, the Y said. The program aims to provide young adolescents with healthful, structured activities at a critical juncture in their development, the Y said in a news release.

Free programs and activities include open swims and open gyms, fitness orientations, special group exercise classes, racquet sports and spinning classes. There are also volunteer opportunities and special youth activities, such as Youth Fun Nights, held monthly during the school year.

To register, students must go to the Y at 59 Post Road E. accompanied by a parent or guardian and produce a student ID or report card to verify where they go to school.

They must participate in a group tour of the Y, and orientation sessions in the fitness center.

The program's goal is to promote well-being through enhanced self-esteem and increased understanding of the importance of exercise and healthy nutrition throughout the teen years and into adulthood, the Y said.

Funding to support the seventh-grade initiative is from contributions to the Y's annual Strong Kids Campaign, which also provides financial aid for memberships, programs, child care and camp scholarships.
