The Westport Weston Family Y will offer a four-session lifeguarding course in February geared to strong swimmers ages 15 and over.

Successful completion of the course includes American Red Cross certification as a lifeguard, qualifying the person to serve as a lifeguard at pools and beaches, the Y said.

The sessions are planned over two weekends -- Feb. 15-16 and Feb. 22-23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Y, 59 Post Road East, Westport.

The course emphasizes practical lifesaving skills and job-related responsibilities, such as guarding techniques, accident prevention, emergency systems, rescue skills and first aid in aquatic environments.

Designed for people who have never been certified or whose certification has expired, the course also includes certification in CPR for the professional rescuer, use of an automated external defibrillator and standard first aid.

The course costs $350, $325 for Y members.

To register for the lifeguarding course, visit www.westporty.org; call Nicole Turechek at 203-226-8981, ext. 128; or email her at nturechek@westporty.org.
