Wreckers knock off Norwalk in straight sets

WESTPORT — Staples girls volleyball came back in a big way after dropping their last game against Greenwich. The Wreckers outmatched Norwalk en route to a 3-0 straight sets win.
“It was great,” Staples coach Jon Shepro said. “I think we worked on a couple of things. We had a tough loss the other day against Greenwich. We came to practice looking at ways to improve that and it showed up this game.”
The Wreckers came out early and didn’t let up against the struggling Bears - winning the first set convincingly 25-9.
Norwalk would rebound in the second set, scrapping their way to a 5-5 tie through the first 10 points. But that would be as close as the Bears would get.
Staples ripped off six straight points to take a commanding lead in the set before winning it.
In the third and final set, the Wreckers continued to do much of the same as they were able to defend the net with strong defense and attack when the time came on the serve.
Seniors Amanda Troelstra, who finished with four kills, and Mackenzie Lesher, who added in six aces and seven kills, lead the way for the Wreckers.
“I think we were a lot more confident,” Troelstra said. “Just having FCIAC’s and states in our heads. We know just pushing our hardest and we win the games that FCIAC’s is in views.”
While the game didn’t go as planned, there is still room for improvement for the Bears, Norwalk coach Karey Fitzgerald said.
“I think we have a lot of talent,” she said. “I think we have a lot of athletes and a great bunch of girls on this team. Maybe today just wasn’t our day.”
NOTHING LIKE SOME HOME COOKING
After knocking off Norwalk, the Wreckers are 3-1 when playing at home this season with the only loss coming in a 3-2 effort against Greenwich.
WIN SOME, LOSS SOME
Staples has won every game this season following a loss.
“There’s still a lot of season left. We’re still battling to make it to the FCIAC playoffs. There’s still lots on the line.” Staples coach Jon Shepro.
