The Westport Woman's Club recently gave its 2013 Ruegg Grant Award worth $5,000 to Wakeman Town Farm.

The farm will use the funds to buy a green house that will provide year-round growing capability, as well as the opportunity to offer indoor gardening education programs in conjunction with local schools.

The farm is a nonprofit educational center that teaches about organic farming, sustainability and homesteading and hosts events designed to bring families to the farm. It has partnered with the Westport Parks and Recreation Department to promote various children's programs, including summer camps, a Farm Apprentice Program, a Middle School Farm Club and internships for high school and college students.

The grant was established in 1995 by an endowment to the club by member Lea Ruegg. To date, about $160,000 has been awarded to at least 16 local nonprofit organizations.
