A Westport woman's essay about one of her cancer nurses has resulted in the nurse's selection as a finalist for a national oncology nursing award. Wendy Crowther's essay described how Mary Heery, a nurse at Norwalk Hospital's breast-health center, drove through a holiday-season blizzard in December 2010 to hand-deliver educational materials shortly after Crowther was diagnosed with breast cancer, according to a news release.

Based on Crowther's essay, Heery has been named one of three finalists for Cure Magazine's Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing, the magazine said in the news release.

Both the patient and nurse will go to New Orleans for the May 3 Oncology Nursing Society's Annual Congress, where the winner will be announced. The other nurse-patient finalists are from Indiana and New Mexico, and all three essay writers will read their essays at the conference, according to Cure.
