A transformer "failure" -- apparently the result of an explosion -- has knocked out electric service in the area of Saugatuck Avenue and Interstate 95 in Westport this evening, as well as shut down the highway's ramps in both directions at the Exit 17 junction.

Fire, police and utility crews are on the scene of the explosion, which took place shortly before 6 p.m. The fire has been extinguished.

No one was hurt, according to police.

About 150 customers of Connecticut Light & Power had no power about an hour later, but several hundred others initially lost electric service. It was not immediately clear if the remaining outages were related to the transformer incident or related to the day's ice storm.

The state Department of Transportation reports that the I-95 ramps at Saugatuck Avenue may be closed for several hours.
