Abbey Fernandez of Westport has been awarded the STAR Youth Volunteer of the Year award for her work on behalf of recreation programs for adults with intellectual disabilities.

Fernandez has volunteered for five years with STAR, a not-for-profit organization that works with adults and children with developmental disabilities. Her work included helping with recreational activities, such as bowling, dances and other activities, as well as assisting with fundraising events.

She recently initiated the Student Volunteer Club at Staples High School for students interested in volunteering with organizations in need of student volunteers, such as STAR.

The award was presented at STAR's annual meeting Oct. 28.
