An 18-year-old Westporter has been charged with several drug and traffic violations in connection with an April 7 accident that caused significant structural damage to a Post Road East office building.
Matthew Jerome, 18, surrendered to police Saturday on a warrant issued for his arrest following the police investigation into the crash.
Jerome was driving a pickup truck that witnesses said was traveling at a high speed when it veered off the road and rammed the office building at 489 Post Road East, knocking a large hole in the masonry structure.
Police, fire and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the accident scene, and Jerome and his passenger were transported to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
A search of the pickup truck conducted by police reportedly found marijuana, drug paraphernalia and oxycodone pills. A toxicology report on Jerome's blood at the time of the accident tested positive for marijuana, police said.
Jerome was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and operating under the influence of drugs.
He was released on $15,000 bond and is scheduled to appear May 16 in Norwalk Superior Court.
