Westport Boy Scouts will begin collecting "retired" Christmas trees, that will eventually be turned into mulch and used by the town.

The post-holiday evergreen tree collection will be held Saturday, Jan.11. Trees should be put out in front yards or driveways the night before since the pickups will start early in the morning.

Boy Scout Troop 39, which is conducting the collection, is asking that a suggested donation of $17 be taped to the resident's front door to support local scouting and outreach, including community service projects and the Eagle Scout program.

The tree collection project also helps the town of Westport since the trees are turned over to the town and will be ground into mulch for use around town on public properties.

The tree collection was established in 2011 by scout parent Eric Montgomery, who organized volunteers, equipment, town clearances and scheduled routes.

For more information, contact Eric Montgomery at 203-806-0779. The snow date for the collection will be Sunday, Jan. 12.
