Two students suffered minor injuries in a Westport school bus accident Friday morning at the intersection of North Avenue and Lyons Plains Road, near Westport's border with Weston.

Twenty-three Coleytown Elementary School students and a school aide were on the bus at the time of the accident.

According to Weston police Sgt. Matt Brodacki, a preliminary investigation showed the bus was traveling north on Lyons Plains Road at approximately 8:30 a.m. when it veered off the street, hit a tree and came to rest against a stone wall.

The accident remains under investigation, and there was no information about possible reasons for the crash at the end of Friday.

The kids were huddled on the side of the road when police came, Brodacki reported. The two injured students were evaluated on scene by EMS and then released to the custody of their parents, police said.

The driver, however, was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of a possible broken leg.

An inspection on the bus by the Department of Motor Vehicles was conducted, but Brodacki said Friday afternoon there were no new details about the incident to release.

The school district contracts with Dattco for transportation; Alan Miller, terminal manager for the bus company's Westport office, declined to comment.

In a prepared statement, Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon said, "We are delighted that none of our students were seriously injured in this accident and thankful for the quick response of the town's emergency personnel to this incident.

"We also are proud of the actions of our school bus monitor to ensure the safety of all our students," he added.
