Hopkins junior Julia Bartimer, who spent her first two years of high school at Staples, helped the girls tennis team at Hopkins win a New England title. Hopkins went 14-1 under coach Michael McManus, and the final was the first in team history.
Hopkins defeated Kingswood-Oxford, a team that they had beaten 4-3 during the regular season, in the last match. Bartimer (No. 3 singles) and teammate Emily Hao (No. 4) faced must-win situations with their team trailing 4-1 in the match. Bartimer came back after dropping the first set to win the second. Hao won her first then lost her second set.
Both players proceeded to play 10 point deciding tie-breakers, both of which were tied at 7-7. Bartier then rattled off the next three points to win 10-7.
The deciding points came down to Hao’s match, which was tied 9-9 in the tie breaker. Hao won two straight points to seal the first title in school history.
