Alan Sterling, 73, of 8 Sylvan Road South, was charged early Tuesday with driving under the influence.

Sterling was driving slowly west on Bridge Street, weaving in and out of the westbound lane and into the eastbound lane, police said. He was eventually stopped on Riverside Avenue.

While speaking with Sterling, an officer observed that Sterling's eyes were slightly red and glassy and that his speech was slow and slurred. There was a distinct odor of alcohol on his breath, police said.

When the officer returned to his vehicle to conduct a computer check on Sterling's license, Sterling's vehicle began backing up. The vehicle did not stop, and the rear bumper of Sterling's vehicle struck the right front bumper of the cruiser, causing damage, police said.

He also failed a field sobriety test, police said.

Sterling was charged with operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to drive in the proper lane, failure to carry an insurance card and unsafe backing. Sterling was unable to post bond and was arraigned Tuesday morning in Norwalk Superior Court.
