Contemporary living doesn't get much better than in the contemporary-style house at 4 Harbor Hill in the Compo Beach area of Westport.

The 5,000-square-foot house was built in 1989 on a lot size of 1.03 acres. The property includes a heated Gunite in-ground swimming pool and a Har-Tru tennis court. Inside, there are five levels of living space including a large lower-level media or family room with a bar and a good-size gym or exercise room that has one mirrored wall.

There is also a full bath, one of two on this lower level, which is ideal for those coming inside after swimming laps, playing tennis or gardening.

With all the recreational activities only steps away, it's unlikely any of the residents of this house would feel the need to leave.

But should they want a change of pace, there are other facilities within walking distance, among them the Longshore Club Park, Compo Beach and Mill Cove Beach. Harbor Hill is a private lane off Compo Road South.

The house once contained an indoor swimming pool. That pool was removed in 2003, and that lower-level space was converted into a large family or media room, which features a bar area and kitchenette with a dishwasher, refrigerator and microwave.

This is a great area for entertaining, whether the party is strictly indoors or poolside as there are multiple sets of sliding doors to the backyard.

Although the house was not built with solar energy systems, thought did go into its placement on the property, its angles and its number of large windows and glass doors to maximize solar efficiency. Inside, there is an open floor plan. Several rooms, including the formal dining room and the main floor family room, have doors to decks that overlook the pool, tennis courts and attractive flower gardens.

The family room and formal living room have floor-to-ceiling stone fireplaces.

In a departure from the typical house, this one has two bedrooms on a level that is lower than the main living level. The master bedroom has its own level above the main living space; and above that floor is a loft office.

The lowest, or basement, level, which has the media room and gym, also contains a laundry room and a fourth bedroom with a full bath that could serve as an au pair, in-law or guest room.

The master bedroom suite includes a former porch that was converted into a sitting room.

It also features electric shades that are operated by remote control, a floor-to ceiling marble fireplace and built-in shelves.

The master bath has a dressing room with a marble-countered vanity, grass-paper wall covering, steam shower, jetted tub and a water closet.

Outside, the property is professionally landscaped with a variety of trees, shrubs and flower gardens. There is a landscape architect's plan available for the next owner detailing the types of perennials that are planted on the property and listing their Latin names, colors and the months in which they bloom.

In the 20 years that the current owners have lived in this house, they have made numerous improvements, among them the installation of a new roof in 1998.

They renovated and updated the kitchen in 1996 adding custom bird's eye maple cabinetry and granite counters; and in 2009 and 2010 they replaced the wood on a lower deck and the deck off the kitchen with ultra-low maintenance AZEK deck boards.
