A man wielding a knife robbed a bank in Westport, near the town line with Norwalk, on Friday afternoon, police said.

The incident took place shortly after 1 p.m. when the man entered the Citibank office at 399 Post Road West, near the Norwalk border, and after showing the teller a knife, passed a note demanding money, according to police.

He was handed an undetermined amount of cash and fled west on foot into Norwalk, police said.

The man was described by police as black, in his late 30s to early 40s, about 6 feet tall with a muscular upper body, clean shaven and wearing a long black trench-style coat, blue hat with orange lettering.

Westport police were assisted by the Norwalk police K-9 unit and State Police in searching for the robbery suspect.

Evidence, including the trench coat was later found about a mile from the scene on Sylvan Road North at Marion Road. Police believe the man probably left that area by car.

Anyone who may have seen the robbery or has information about the incident is asked to contact the Westport Police Detective Bureau at 203-341-6080.
