The Westport Weston Family Y is throwing itself a birthday party -- a party to celebrate 90 years in town. The block-style party will be held on Wednesday, Sept 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Church Lane, which will be closed off for the event.
Continuous family-oriented activities are planned for the party including (weather permitting) special performances by Y gymnasts, a bounce house and other games for young children, music, food vendors, an exhibit of vintage cars, a pep rally for the 200-member Water Rat Swim Team, and afternoon tea for adults served in the Bresslin Room.
At 5:30 p.m. on Church Lane there will be a group sing-along of "Happy Birthday, Family Y," and birthday cake and a beverage will be served. There will also be a special announcement to commemorate the Bedford family's founding gift to the Y 90 years ago and the continuing support of the Y and its new home by the Bedford family, which now extends to a fifth generation of Bedford descendants.
The new facility is under construction at the Y's 32-acre Mahackeno campus and scheduled to open in September 2014. The road leading to the new Y has been renamed Allen Raymond Lane in honor of Y Trustee Emeritus Allen Raymond, who was born the same year the Westport YMCA was established in 1923.
