Man charged with DUI

John Backus, 47, of 19 Davenport Ave., was charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive right and operating a motor vehicle without a license around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. He was allegedly observed crossing the double-yellow center line while traveling west on Charles Street.

When Backus was pulled over, he had an odor of alcohol on his breath, according to police. He failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test at police headquarters, police said.

Bond was set at $260 and he is scheduled to appear Sept. 16 in Norwalk Superior Court.

Cops: Man had weapon in car

Joseph James, 26, of Groton, was charged with having weapons in a motor vehicle about 5:30 p.m. Friday. He was pulled over by police when a computer check revealed that his motor vehicle registration was suspended because of an insurance lapse. After he was stopped, it was also discovered his license was under suspension, police said.

A search of James' vehicle revealed that he was carrying a large martial-arts type sword in the trunk of his vehicle, police said.

Bond was set at $1,000 and James is scheduled to appear Sept. 13 in Norwalk Superior Court.

DUI charged on Wilton Road

Mila Dantonio, 37, of Bridgeport, was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane around 12:30 a.m. Saturday shortly after being observed crossing over the double-yellow line while traveling north on Wilton Road.

When stopped, officers detected an odor of alcohol on Dantonio's breath, police said. She was taken into custody after failing a field sobriety testing. She allegedly registered a 0.217 and a 0.208 on the Breathalyzer. A blood-alcohol reading of 0.08 is considered legally intoxicated in Connecticut. Bond was set at $500 and she is scheduled to appear Sept. 13 in Norwalk Superior Court.

Driver faces DUI charge on Riverside Avenue

Brian Turano, 37, of 103 Bradley Lane, was charged with driving under the influence and improper parking around 2:15 a.m. Saturday after he was observed stopped in a traffic lane on Riverside Avenue, at the intersection of Saugatuck Avenue.

When officers pulled behind his vehicle, it appeared that Turano was sleeping. He allegedly had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and failed a field sobriety testing. Turano refused to take a Breathalyzer test at police headquarters, police said. Bond was set at $500 and he is scheduled to appear Sept. 13 in Norwalk Superior Court.

traffic charges

Jonathan Lieber, 37, of 30 Cranbury Road, was charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive right and traveling unreasonably fast around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. He was pulled over after being observed weaving as he drove west on Partrick Road. Lieber was also clocked traveling 40 miles an hour in a 25-mph zone, police said.

He allegedly had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and was placed under arrest after failing a field sobriety testing. Lieber refused to take a Breathalyzer test at police headquarters.

Bond was set at $500 and he is scheduled to appear Sept. 13 in Norwalk Superior Court.

Man arrested on DUI charge

John Laux, 53, of 7 Vineyard Lane, was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police were notified by a motorist that Laux was driving erratically on Compo Road South. Officers subsequently stopped him in the area of 149 Cross Highway, where they allegedly detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Laux was placed under arrest after failing a field sobriety testing. He refused to take the Breathalyzer test at police headquarters, police said. Bond was set at $500 and he is scheduled to appear Sept. 16 in Norwalk Superior Court.
