A fresh take on food drives will benefit the Bridgeport Rescue Mission at the Westport Farmer's Market, 7 Sylvan Lane, on March 10.
Sponsored by MXenergy, a retail natural gas and electricity supplier, market customers that day are being asked to donate fresh food, as well as canned foods, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
"When you think of food drives, we all think of the boxes of pre-packaged food and canned goods," said Marjorie Kass, MXenergy managing director. "It is a rare, wonderful opportunity to be able to provide fresh, organic, healthy food to people who truly need it."
The farmer's market features more than 25 vendors offering organic vegetables, greenhouse greens, eggs, milk, wood-fired pizzas, cheese, baked goods, meats, gluten-free and raw food options.
There will be a live, two-hour radio broadcast during the food drive, by radio station 95.9-FM the FOX, along with giveaways by the station and coupons for 50 percent off lunch at the market to all who donate to the food drive.
MXenergy will also provide recyclable bags and a truck to transport the food to the Bridgeport Rescue Mission.
The mission operates three facilities in Bridgeport, providing service to the homeless and underprivileged through a food pantry, clothing bank, women's shelter, homeless shelter and soup kitchen. The soup kitchen provides three meals a day and serves more than 40,000 meals each month.
"This winter has been unusually long and harsh," Kass said. "This has put a strong demand on the mission and they greatly need donations so they can continue meeting the needs of our community."
