The Westport Weston Family Y and the Westport Center for Senior Activities are both open today for people who need to take shelter from the extreme cold.

The Y, at 59 Post Road East, "welcomes those who may be affected by the current weather conditions, whether it's due to a power outage, frozen water pipes or insufficient heat in their own homes," Rob Reeves, the Family Y CEO, said in a statement posted on its website Tuesday morning.

"We want everyone in our community to be safe and to find warmth and comfort -- or a workout and a hot shower -- at the Family Y as long as these hazardous conditions persist."

The Family Y is open until 10 p.m.

Anyone who wants to take shelter at the Y is asked to check in at the member services desk near the Church Lane entrance. For more information, call 203-226-8981.

The Senior Center, at 21 Imperial Ave., will be open until 4:30 p.m. to anyone seeking a warm refuge.
