Westport Arts Center asks kids to design toys
Published 6:26 am, Tuesday, February 4, 2014
The Westport Arts Center is seeking unique and imaginative toy designs created by children 5 to 12 years old for its third annual Toy Makers competition. Children can submit up to three concepts for interactive toys, action figures, games, or their own original creation.
The competition will culminate March 9 on "Family Art Day," when finalists from three age groups -- ages 5 to 6; 7 to 9, and 10 to 12 -- will present their toy designs to a panel of judges. Finalists will be chosen by Melissa and Doug Bernstein, founders of the Melissa & Doug toy company. Each toy designer will describe their inspiration, how their toy works, and why it will be a successful toy.
The judges will select first-, second- and third-place winners. Participants at Family Art Day will also vote for their favorite design. First-place winners will receive a scholarship to a Westport Arts Center Summer Camp, a gift certificate to Max's Art Supplies, and a private tour of the Melissa & Doug toy factory in Wilton.
All entries are due by Monday, Feb. 10.
The Family Art Day program is planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave. Tickets are $10 per child and free for adults and children under 2 years old.
