A public reception is planned Sunday, March 13, for Weston Public Library Director Jane Atkinson, who is retiring after 36 years. The reception will be hosted by the library board from 3 to 5 p.m. in the library's community room.

During Atkinson's tenure, the size of the library has doubled, according to the board, and the reception is planned to thank her for her contributions to both the library and the town. Her last day as director is Friday, March 4.

Atkinson has been involved with libraries all of her working life. Before coming to Weston, she worked at the Russell Library in Middletown, the Olin Library at Wesleyan University and at the Trumbull Library.

She joined the Weston Public Library in July 1975 and became director in April 1980.

Under her leadership, the children's room was expanded in 1985 to complete the original Joseph Salerno design. An addition, which includes the community room, was completed in 1993.

She also brought the library into the digital age, automating services in 2001.

The Library Board asks those interested in attending the reception to RSVP by e-mail at westonlibraryct@gmail.com or by calling Amy Sanborn at 203-454-2668.
