A pair of water main breaks in Westport Monday disrupted service to about 1,000 customers in Westport, Fairfield, Weston and Wilton, according to the Aquarion Water Co.

While the breaks directly affected dozens of residences and a few businesses, and caused significant traffic delays in downtown, crews worked through the day and had service restored by midnight Monday.

The first break occurred in Westport near the intersection of Newtown Turnpike and Woodcock Lane, not far from the Wilton town line, at about 11 a.m. Water spilled on the road and surrounding properties after a 24-inch pipe burst.

The second, smaller break occurred at 1 p.m. on the corner of Post Road West and Riverside Avenue in downtown Westport. That break knocked out service to nine customers, including Napoli Restaurant, and caused heavy traffic in the downtown area.

Aquarion spokesman Bruce Silverstone said he expected service to be completely restored between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The cause of the two water main breaks will remain unknown until an engineer reviews the damage, Silverstone added.

"The ground could shift. It could be an old pipe. It could be the rumbling off a truck on top of it. Its life expectancy could be reached," he said.
