Walter J. Sassano, 89, of West Harrison, N.Y., and a former Weston resident, died Dec. 28, 2010.

Born Sept. 4, 1921, he attended Columbia University before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942; he was discharged as a captain in 1946. He joined his family business, General Floorcraft in the Bronx, with his brother Joe, until he retired. He was a lifetime member of Ernest Pasqua American Legion Post, and also had been active in Little League, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was chairman of the Village of Ardsley Recreation Committee, and of the School District Recreation Committee. He helped form the Ardsley Dad's Club, as well as a charter member of the Ardsley Swim Club. He became a Giant season ticket holder in 1957, and attended the team's games for 53 years. He also had been a member of the Weston Field Club and the Norfield Congregational Church, as well as a member of the Fairfield chapter of AARP.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Kathlyn "Bobbie" Sassano; sons Walter, Christopher, Steve and Ronney; daughters Diane Kain and Bonnie Troy; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Hawkins, and sister in-law, Eleanor Sassano.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday in Norfield Congregational Church, Norfield Road, Weston. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the "Walter J. Sassano" memorial fund in care of the Norfield Church.
