Violinist wins competition

Katie Zhou, a Staples High School junior, has won first place in the strings division of the 37th high school competition sponsored by the Musical Club of Hartford for students living or studying in Connecticut. The winners will give a free concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hartford.
Zhou, who studies violin with Asya Meshberg, will play "BaalShem, No 2: Nigun," by Ernest Bloch. She has played in the Norwalk Youth Symphony and is concertmaster of the Principal Orchestra. She is also winner of the American Chamber Orchestra Concerto competition and performed the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the American Chamber Orchestra last June.
The contest took place Jan. 5 and 6, and awards $4,000 in scholarship prizes to performers in the piano, strings, vocal and woodwinds divisions.
