Three fishermen were rescued by Westport’s police marine unit Saturday when their canoe overturned off Cockenoe Island, dumping them into choppy Long Island Sound.
Police received a distress call from a passing sailboat shortly before 11:30 a.m. Saturday reporting that three people appeared to be struggling in waters east of the island after their vessel had capsized.
Marine Officer Brendan Fearon and Detective Serenity Dobson were dispatched to the scene in Marine Unit 2, and found three men — all wearing life jackets — floating in the water after their 18-foot canoe overturned.
They were pulled from the water and, according to the report, appeared to be in good condition.
The men and their canoe were taken back to Compo Marina by the marine unit.
