Three students in Westport schools have been recognized in the annual Connecticut Student Writers contest, sponsored by the University of Connecticut Department of English.

The contest, open to state students in kindergarten through senior year in high school, has categories in poetry, fiction, essay and drama.

The local winners are:

- Charles Effman, a seventh-grader at Coleytown Middle School, published, for his poem "Trees."

- Samantha Gefen, a seventh-grader at Coleytown Middle School, honorable mention, for her poem, "Evidence Eater."

- Julian Garrison, a Staples High School senior, honorable mention, for his poem, "You, Etched in Silver."

The students will be honored at a May 13 ceremony at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts at UConn.
