Things to do in Westport this weekend
Updated 7:38 am, Saturday, January 25, 2014
Yes, it's cold outside. And maybe even a bit snowy. But that's no reason to spend this Westport weekend cooped up at home, staring at the TV. Here are some suggestions to get you up and out the door:
Help celebrate WestportREADS at a wine and cheese party Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Westport Country Playhouse, 25 Powers Court. Julia Child, who wrote this year's WestportREADS theme book, "My Life in France," would have joined the toasts. Cost is $35 per person. For more information visit, www.westportlibrary.org or call 203-291-4800.
"Winterfest" is celebrated Saturday at Earthplace, 10 Woodside Lane, when the 73-acre nature site is open free of charge -- and, if you believe the weather forecast, appears to have even arranged for snow to help with festivities. Activities include indoor and outdoor crafts, hot chocolate, a bonfire, horse-drawn sleigh rides ($2 fee), a trail walk and tours of the Harbor Watch lab. The Winterfest hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit www.earthplace.org or call 203-227-7253 for more information.
The Westport Radical Jewish Culture Festival, with Schizophonia in concert, promises a cutting-edge performance at the Conservative Synagogue of Westport, 30 Hillspoint Road. The concert starts at 9:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Center for Jewish Arts and Literacy at Beit Chaverim Synagogue. Visit www.beitchaverim.com for more information.
Get the "Cover Story: The New Yorker in Westport" at the Westport Historical Society, 25 Avery Place. An opening reception for the exhibit, as well as a second exhibit, "Can't Tell a Book by its Cover ..." will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday. Call 203-222-1424 or visit www.westporthistory.org.
End the weekend on a high note with Jim Clark: Jazz Saxophone Giants on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students with a valid ID. Tickets are available in advance or at the door 30 minutes prior the performance. Visit www.westportartscenter.org
