It's almost time to say goodbye to 2012, so make the most of the last few days of the year. Here are a few suggestions to fill the time in Westport until singing "Auld Lang Syne":
Find your "Muse" on Saturday at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave., with an exhibition featuring paintings and drawings by Paul Cadmus and Jane Sutherland, as well as sculpture and works on paper by Pablo Picasso, Chuck Close and Philis Raskind-Anderson. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Saturday as well as Sunday, and admission is free. Call 203-226-1806 or visit westportartscenter.org for information.
Continue the art theme on Saturday with a visit to the Westport River Gallery, 1 Riverside Ave., to ponder "Zheng's View of Tibetan Village Life," featuring original oil paintings, water colors and oil sketches. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free. For more information call 203-226-6934 or visit www.westportrivergallery.com
If you need a little help deciding what wine to serve New Year's festivities this weekend, swing by Bottlerocket, 1790 Post Road East, for a free wine tasting at 1 p.m. Saturday. Call 203-259-3939 for more information.
There's no need to wait until midnight to ring in the New Year when "First Night 2013" kicks off Monday at 4 p.m. at venues around downtown. Entertainment ranges from Chris Coogan to Giorgio Fareira and face painting to free horse-drawn carriage rides, capped off by a laser show extravaganza over the Saugatuck River at 10:30 p.m. The venues on Main Street and nearby are all within walking distance for this family-friendly event. Find more information about First Night Westport/Weston and the complete schedule at www.firstnightww.com. Admission buttons are $15.
If you're looking for something a little more elegant for New Year's Eve you can attend the New Year's Eve Ball at the Ballroom Elegance Dance Studio, 627 Post Road East. The black-tie affair features a dance show, dance lesson and, of course, dancing. Hors d'oeuvres, desserts, soft drinks and a Champagne toast at midnight are included in the $80 per person ticket. Reservations are required. Call 203-454-9400.
